MIRACLES

Part 4: Feeding the 5000

Miracle #4: Feeding the 5000

(John 5:1-9 NIV) 1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

Lessons from the Loaves

  • Don’t measure your problems according

to ______________, measure them according

to __________________.

  • ______ in the hands of Jesus becomes _____.

(Judges 7:7 LB) ‘I’ll conquer the Midianites with these three hundred!’ the Lord told Gideon. ‘Send all the others home!’

(1 Samuel 17:50 NCV) So David defeated the Philistine with only a sling and a stone. He hit him and killed him. He did not even have a sword in his hand.

  • God ___________ our resources.
  • God ___________ our need.
  • Someone _________ with what little they have.
  • God _________________ we have to show how great He is.

Four Steps to a Miracle

  1. Identify _____________________.

2. Accept _________________________.

(Mark 6:37) But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”

  • We _____________________.

(Mark 6:35) By this time it was late in the day

  • We _________________________.

(Mark 6:36) Send the people away

  • We _________________________.

(John 5:7) It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite

3. Do _______________________.

(Mark 6:38 NIV) “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”

(John 6:9 NIV) Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up…how far will this go among so many?

(2 Corinthians 8:12 Ph) The important thing is to be willing to give as much as we can — that is what God accepts, and no one is asked to give what he has not got.

4. Expect _____________________.

(Matthew 9:29 NIV) According to your faith will it be done to you.

(John 6:30-31,35) So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”…Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
