DAVID Part 6:

Healing the Father Wound

(2 Samuel 18:6-9) David’s army marched out of the city to fight Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. There Israel’s troops were routed by David’s men, and the casualties that day were great—twenty thousand men. The battle spread out over the whole countryside, and the forest swallowed up more men that day than the sword. Now Absalom happened to meet David’s men. He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom’s hair got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going.

(2 Samuel 14:21-24 NLT) So the king sent for Joab and told him, “All right, go and bring back the young man Absalom.”…But the king gave this order: “Absalom may go to his own house, but he must never come into my presence.” So Absalom did not see the king.

(1 Kings 1:6 NLT) Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking, “Why are you doing that?” Adonijah had been born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome.

Causes of the Father Wound

  • ___________ – I am unimportant.
  • __________ – divorce, separation, death.
  • __________– mental, physical, sexual, spiritual.
  • __________ – oppressive domination.
  • _____________ – love or affirmation.

Barriers to Healing

  • _________.

(2 Sam 14:25-28) Now Absalom was praised as the most handsome man in all Israel. He was flawless from head to foot. He cut his hair only once a year, and then only because it was so heavy. When he weighed it out, it came to five pounds!…Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years, but he never got to see the king.

  • _____________.

(2 Samuel 15:5-6 NLT) When people tried to bow before him, Absalom wouldn’t let them. Instead, he took them by the hand and kissed them. Absalom did this with everyone who came to the king for judgment, and so he stole the hearts of all the people of Israel.

  • ______________.

(Matthew 13:15) For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.

Healing the Father Wound

  1. _____________: _________ your wounds.

(Jeremiah 6:14 LB) You can’t heal a wound by saying it’s not there!

(Psalm 109:22 NASB) For I am afflicted and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

2. _____________: _________ into the wounds.

(1 Peter 2:24) By His wounds you have been healed.

3. _____________: _________ your father.

(Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT) Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

4. _____________: Accept God’s ___________.

(2 Corinthians 6:18) “And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters”, says the Lord Almighty.

(Romans 8:15) So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when He adopted you as His own children.  Now we call Him, “Abba, Father.”
